If I were the President of the United States, the first thing I would do would be to promote peace and unity. I would encourage my fellow Americans to give service to one another. When you serve someone, you connect with them and learn to love them. I would have national service days and create/promote service organizations. First, we would start serving each other because as one of my favorite authors, J.K Rowling, once stated “We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided”. If we fellow Americans serve one another we will become united, which will lead to peace within our great country. If we stand united we will become a stronger people. We can only encourage peace and unity to other parts of the world if our country within is peaceful and together as one. Once we are serving one another in the United States, we can start serving other countries in need of our help. Serving will cause love between the countries we serve, which will lead to peace and unity. This summer I decided to serve my community. I chose to serve children that were suffering from hunger. I served at elementary lunch programs and food banks within my city. I gained a lot from those experiences and feel like I became a better person from my services. I defiantly found peace with these children and learned to love them. I feel united with the children I served and would do anything for them. Service is a powerful tool. If we serve the people around us and those not around us, then we will gain peace and unity with them. If everyone can learn to serve then we wouldn’t have world wars. Mahatma Gandhi counseled “Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or another. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger, and it will make not only for our own happiness, but that of the world at large”. Gandhi knows that service can create peace and joy in our crazy world in which we live in. If I were the President of the United States I wouldn’t just promote service. I would put my words into action. I would spend a lot of time serving others because I know the benefits that come out of service. I would pick a different cause every month and donate my time and service to it. One month it could be serving the refugees in the United States, while the next month would be creating hygiene kits for Africa. I could also lead by example in small ways by doing simple services for my family, friends, and neighbors. Service can lead to great things and can eventually change our lives. If everyone would serve, then we as a community, state, country, or world would have peace and unity. Though realistically I am not the president, I can still promote serve and will lead by example because I know service will lead to peace and unity.
