An Essay on Caring

Caring is not composed of just one or two things;
It’s a feeling of affection, native to human beings.
It binds us all together with a common thread
And helps us feel not hate, but love instead.

Caring is more than just an idle thought.
It requires faith and action more often than not.
To have a caring heart is to help someone in need,
Often manifested through a kindly deed.

Specifically, I’d like to focus on the spoken word,
Although this may sound a little bit absurd.
We’re usually rudest to those we know the best,
Even if we try to pass it off as jest.

Be careful of everything that you say and do,
Because you never know how it reflects on you.
It is unwise to speak what first pops into your head,
Because some things are just better left unsaid.

Instead, switch things up and be kind for a change,
And in the long run you may notice something strange:
The world is a better place because of you
And all the kind things you have chosen to do.

But how do we show others that we really care?
How do we manifest our love for them is there?
Too often we think that if we don’t do something grand
That our caring will seem rather tasteless and bland.

Please let me argue that that is just not true.
You don’t need something fancy to say, “I love you.”
Similarly, sometimes the best deeds of all
Are the ones that may seem insignificantly small.

Simple acts of kindness each and every day
Help to drive the fog of hopelessness away.
Even just something as simple as a smile
Can help make people feel like they are worthwhile.

Another point that I’d like to touch on today,
Is about seeing people in a different way.
We often make snap judgments of those souls we don’t like–
Things we use against them when we’re ready to strike.

What if instead we let go of those thoughts?
What if we unloaded all our verbal shots?
Would we lose a foe and would we gain a friend?
Or repair a friendship we’d thought impossible to mend?

Furthermore, we don’t know what they’ve been going through,
You might have done the same if it had been you.
Don’t be quick to judge because it’s not very fun,
And will be detrimental for you in the long run.

Patience is another thing we’d do well to obtain.
If caring is our goal then we need to refrain
From being too quick to let our tempers shatter.
Usually we yell over things that don’t matter,

Be conscious about how loudly you speak–
Talking softly does not mean that you’ve become weak.
Rather it shows that you’re stronger than most,
And a capable being well suited for your post.

My parting words for you today would be this:
Though it’s true that life is not always bliss,
If we all try our best to be kinder to others,
We’ll gain tenfold new sisters and brothers.
