One thing that has surfaced in these extraordinary times is human ingenuity.  Human ingenuity and the willingness to do what it takes to support our communities using our talents and skills to fill a need.

We have all heard about the shortage of personal protective equipment for our medical workers, let alone for the average citizen.  Instead of waiting and depending upon official channels of aid, not knowing when help would arrive, people picked up their tools and made do. In this case, the tool is a sewing machine.

One example is The College of the Siskiyous (in California) sewing class that immediately took it upon themselves the make an “assignment” out of making masks and donating them to local hospitals.  These students enjoy putting their skills to use to help the medical workers who are doing their best to keep us all healthy.

Another example is Amelia Mallory who has been sewing masks since her primary source of income was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only does it put food on her family’s table, but she is supplying them at a very affordable cost to people in her community.  Ms. Mallory says that being able to help in this way is a huge mental health benefit for her during these trying times.

When we heard that there was a need for more cotton cloth to continue making masks, UCA fulfilled this need with a sponsorship to provide supplies to keep these wonderful sewing angels in production.  As this need continues in communities, UCA is here to keep the good works going. UCA is dedicated to continue to bring more caring into the world through caring action like this.
